BTEC Level 2 · Unit 2
Technology Systems
Computer hardware, software and how technology systems work together.
My previous BTEC Level 2 Information & Creative Technology course · Updated 6 October 2026
Unit overview
Grade: Level 2 Pass (L2P) · Points: 12
In this unit, I learned about system components including input and output devices, storage, processors and operating systems. I also developed an understanding of how data is processed and how technology systems are used in everyday situations.
What I learned in Unit 2
Unit 2 – Technology Systems
In Technology Systems, I learned how computers and digital devices work.
This included learning about the main parts of a computer system and understanding how hardware and software work together.
I studied areas such as:
- Computer hardware
- Input devices
- Output devices
- Storage
- Processors
- Memory
- Operating systems
- Networks
- Computer performance
This unit improved my technical understanding of computers.
Hardware
I learned about different computer hardware components.
These include:
- CPU
- RAM
- Storage devices
- Motherboard
- Graphics card
- Power supply
- Cooling systems
I learned that each component has a different purpose.
For example, the CPU processes instructions, RAM stores temporary data and storage devices keep files for longer periods.
Input and Output Devices
I learned about input devices such as:
- Keyboard
- Mouse
- Microphone
- Camera
- Barcode reader
- Scanner
I also learned about output devices such as:
- Monitor
- Printer
- Speakers
- Projector
This helped me understand how users communicate with computer systems.
Operating Systems
I learned about the role of an operating system.
An operating system manages the computer and allows hardware and software to work together.
Examples include:
- Windows
- macOS
- Linux
- Android
- iOS
I also learned about functions such as:
- File management
- Memory management
- User accounts
- Security
- Multitasking
- Device management
Device Drivers
I learned that a device driver is software that allows the operating system to communicate with a specific hardware device.
For example, a printer or graphics card may need a driver so that the computer can use it correctly.
Memory and Storage
I learned the difference between RAM and permanent storage.
RAM is temporary memory that is used while programs are running.
Storage devices such as SSDs and hard drives keep files even after the computer is switched off.
I also learned about virtual memory and how it can be used when RAM becomes full.
Computer Performance
I learned that computer performance can be affected by:
- CPU speed
- Number of processor cores
- Amount of RAM
- Storage type
- Graphics performance
- Cooling
- Software
- Number of programs running
This helped me understand why some computers are faster than others.
Assignments and evidence
I have added the topics and learning overview here. Separate exam answers are not published.
Skills I developed
Learning and exam preparation covering input and output devices, storage, processors, operating systems and data processing.
Software I used
I studied computer hardware, software and operating systems. I have not listed a specific software application for this unit.
Teacher feedback
I have not posted written teacher feedback for this unit.
My reflection
I developed a clearer understanding of how hardware and software work together in a technology system. My next step is to explain system choices using more detailed real-world examples.
