Unit overview

Grade: Level 2 Distinction (L2D) · Points: 48

This unit focuses on how customer needs, market trends, business strategy, research and financial planning can support the launch of a technology product.

What I learned in Unit 21

Unit 21 – Technology Business

Technology Business helped me understand how technology products and businesses operate.

This unit connected my IT knowledge with business knowledge.

I studied areas such as:

  • Technology products
  • Product features
  • Customer benefits
  • Unique selling points
  • Market research
  • Competitors
  • Costs
  • Revenue
  • Break-even
  • Risks
  • Business decisions

This unit helped me understand that creating a successful technology product involves both technical and business decisions.

Product Features and Functions

I learned the difference between a feature and a function.

A feature is something a product has.

A function explains what the product can do.

For example, a smartphone may have a high-quality camera as a feature, while taking photos and recording video are functions.

Customer Benefits

I learned that businesses should explain how product features benefit customers.

For example:

A larger battery is a feature.

The benefit is that the customer can use the device for longer without charging it.

This helped me understand how businesses communicate the value of their products.

Unique Selling Point

I learned about the Unique Selling Point, also called a USP.

A USP is something that makes a product or business different from competitors.

A strong USP can help a business attract customers.

Market Research

I learned about primary and secondary research.

Primary Research

Primary research is information collected directly.

Examples include:

  • Surveys
  • Questionnaires
  • Interviews
Secondary Research

Secondary research uses information that already exists.

Examples include:

  • Websites
  • Reports
  • Articles
  • Published statistics

Research helps businesses understand customers and markets.

Competitor Analysis

I learned how businesses compare their products with competitors.

Businesses may compare:

  • Price
  • Features
  • Quality
  • Design
  • Performance
  • Customer benefits
  • Brand reputation

Competitor analysis can help a business identify strengths and weaknesses.

Break-Even

I learned about break-even.

Break-even is the point where the money earned by a business equals the total costs.

At break-even, the business has not made a profit or a loss.

This helped me understand how costs, sales and revenue affect business decisions.

Risks and Solutions

I learned that technology businesses can face different risks.

Examples include:

  • Strong competition
  • High costs
  • Low customer demand
  • Technical problems
  • Changes in technology
  • Security risks

Businesses should identify possible risks and think about solutions.

This helps reduce the chance of problems affecting the business.
